The Challenger may look like a boxer but it is much more. The boxer represents that moment we have all had to face our fears and the man in the mirror to succeed.
Trying to find the right model for this sculpture took over three years and two failed attempts but perseverance paid off. The artist, Terry L. Crowther, had originally envisioned a person in transition, or a recovering alcoholic, looking in the mirror, but that’s not how it played out.
One evening the artist and his wife were watching the movie Creed. In the movie Sylvester Stallone is coaching Creed’s son, Michael B. Jordan, and as they stood in front of a mirror, Stallone said, “See that person in the mirror? He will be your biggest challenge in the ring, as in life.” At that moment the artist realized the image for his sculpture was not a person in transition or a recovering alcoholic, it was a boxer!
As he looks at his finished piece, he is moved by the story it tells as the boxer faces his fears, taking that last look in the mirror and heads to the ring to do what he came to do - give it his all to win. He knows this piece of art will serve the collector well when the collector adds their personal story of facing the man in the mirror.
